Step-by-Step Breakdown of Each Link in Water Quenching Quartz Sand Process

 Every stage of the water quenching quartz sand process determines the final purity and yield of finished sand, and improper operation of any link will directly reduce product quality. We disassemble the six core steps one by one for mineral processing practitioners’ reference.

  1. Raw Material Preparation: Heating temperature is controlled strictly within 1000–1200°C. Binders including kerosene and coal tar act as isolating agents to prevent quartz particles from sintering at high temperature and promote the stripping of iron, aluminum and other impurity inclusions. Excessive binder will cause residual carbon pollution, while insufficient binder leads to particle agglomeration.


  2. Heating Stage: Insulate after reaching the target temperature to realize full crystal transformation of quartz, fully expanding the gap between quartz matrix and impurity minerals, laying the foundation for subsequent water quenching separation.
  3. Water Quenching: Rapid immersion in cold water creates huge thermal stress inside quartz, forming a large number of microcracks. Previously closed impurities wrapped in crystal gaps are exposed to the surface, greatly improving the efficiency of later acid washing and flotation purification.
  4. Cooling: Continuous water circulation cools hot quartz sand to room temperature to avoid secondary crystal recombination after slow cooling, which would seal impurity cracks again.
  5. Separation & Sieving: Multi-stage vibrating screens classify sand by particle size to remove oversized un-cracked coarse grains and ultra-fine slags mixed with high impurities.
  6. Recycling: Recover floating binders in cooling water and recycled fine quartz sand to reduce raw material waste and lower overall plant operating costs.
