Responsible Mining in Action: Tailings Management at the Tanzania 1200t/d Gold Plant

Modern mining demands more than just high recovery rates—it requires responsible environmental practices, especially when it comes to tailings management. At the Tanzania 1,200t/d gold mineral processing plant, Xinhai Mining’s team prioritized sustainable operations from the start, designing a tailings treatment system that met both operational and environmental standards.

Tailings are the byproduct of mineral processing, consisting of fine rock particles, water, and residual chemicals. Without proper management, they can pose environmental risks, from water contamination to land degradation. At the Tanzania plant, we designed a multi-stage tailings treatment system to address these risks while supporting the plant’s overall efficiency.
The process begins with the thickening stage. After the gold extraction process, the tailings slurry is sent to a thickener, a large circular tank where solid particles settle to the bottom. The clear water at the top is recycled back into the processing flow, reducing the plant’s freshwater usage. The thickened slurry at the bottom is then pumped to a dewatering system, where excess water is removed, leaving a dry, stable cake.

This dewatered tailings cake is then safely stacked in a purpose-built tailings facility. The facility is designed to prevent erosion and contamination, with proper lining and monitoring systems to ensure long-term stability. By thickening and dewatering the tailings before stacking, we reduced the volume of material to be stored, minimized the risk of seepage, and created a more manageable, environmentally responsible tailings management process.
This system also supported the plant’s operational efficiency. The recycled water from the thickener reduces the plant’s reliance on external water sources, lowering operational costs and making the plant more resilient to local water shortages. For mining operators, this shows how responsible tailings management isn’t just good for the environment—it’s also good for business.

The Tanzania gold plant is a clear example of how responsible mining practices can be integrated into every stage of a project. At Xinhai Mining, we believe that sustainable operations are a key part of long-term project success, and we work with clients to design tailings management systems that meet both their operational and environmental goals.
